With permanently snow covered peaks reaching over 5100m, the Rwenzoris (or Mountains of the Moon) are one of East Africa’s most stunning hiking destinations.
Unlike some of its more famous neighbours, like Kilimanjaro or Kenya, the Rwenzoris see far fewer visitors.
The higher areas should only be attempted by experienced climbers, but most treks stay below the snow line at 4500m which removes the likelihood of altitude sickness.
A series of day or overnight hikes can be arranged through most DMCS, although specialist operators offer longer treks.
Uganda has two stunning areas for treks, both of outstanding beauty and far less visited than elsewhere. For the enthusiast, they are reputedly exceptional. For the more general visitor, there are shorter but highly rewarding hikes.
